City Central School

ity Central School, the premiere public elementary school in Region VII is nestled in the heart of Cebu City. It is located at the corner of P. del Rosario Street and Osmeña Boulevard - more popularly known as Jones Avenue. In 1913 the school was originally intended for Grades 1 to 4 and was opened at Warwick Barracks, Carbon, where American soldiers were housed at the time. Construction of the Gabaldon Building was completed in the year 1914, presumably with the Thomasites, the first American teachers in the Philippines who arrived on board MV Thomas. The Gabaldon Building at Jones Avenue was built for Grades 5 to 7. This school was then named "City Intermediate School." After the war in 1945, the school was temporarily closed, although some classes were held in some buildings along Sanciangco Street. Eventually, Grades 1 to 4 at Warwick Barracks, Carbon were transferred to the City Intermediate School, and Grades 1 to 6 were all housed together in the Gabaldon Building. In 1945 - 46 the school had the first elementary graduates. Among them who are still known are Mrs. Carolina Quibilan San Luis - the class valedictorian and the sister of Mrs. Rosita Q. Larceña, a retired teacher of City Central School. Atty. Augusto Go - President of the University of Cebu (UC), and Dr. Ronald R. Duterte, former mayor of Cebu City. In 1968, most classes were held in the Gabaldon Building - which is still being used to this day. The building is made up of concrete, galvanized iron and hardwood. There were also three other structures also made up of mixed materials. During this time, the superintendent was an American named Mr. Natter. Among the first teachers of City Central School were Ms. Democracia Esmas, Ms. Lourdes Almendras, Ms. Fe Gabriel, Ms. Felicidad, Ms. Purificacion Solon and Ms. Agas.
In 1946 to 1951, the superintendent was Mr. Pedro Guiang, the supervisor was Mr. Sevilla and the school principal was Mr. Nicanor Tapara.
